How to Design Office Tables

A custom woodworker can build your ideal office table or desk, based on your design. Designing the optimal piece of furniture, however, will take a lot of forethought. Basically consider what you use most frequently and what you need, then base your design on making those features the most accessible. You'll also need to consider the table's placement in the room. If designing tables and desks for other people, consider their basic daily tasks, as well as their office or cubical environment.

Step 1

Consider where in the room the table will be placed. A table designed for a corner will have a different shape from one that sits in the center of the room. Also consider if it will face a wall or face outward.

Once you have a location, choose a shape. Classic shapes include a rectangular surface, an L-shaped surface, a squared off U shape, or a corner shape.

Step 2

Choose between having a flat surface or having built in shelves for tables that face walls or are in corners. Even if your table faces outward, you can add a short built-in section along the front for supplies, books or computer components. Consider what the table is used for.

Step 3

Plan for a computer. Most offices have computers available on every table or desk. Plan a workspace around the computer's components.

Step 4

A table does not have to have drawers, but it can. Decide if you want to add drawers, then choose between shallow drawers along the edge only, or built-in deeper drawers that stack. Deeper drawers can be designed for file storage.

Step 5

Choose a surface for your table. Table surfaces can be polished wood or have a laminate veneer. Choose a surface that best suits the table's use.
